At the inaugural Orange County Debate League Championship held Saturday, March 27 at Fairmont's Anaheim Hills campus, the three teams representing Fairmont (Edgewood, Anaheim Hills, and Mable) secured first, second and third place school awards respectively. These recent victories, coupled with rising dominance for the past three years, have earned for Fairmont a reputation as one of the best debate programs in Orange County. Rochelle Rouhani (Edgewood), Carl Lejerskar (Edgewood), Anjali Narang (Edgewood), Spencer Jallali (Edgewood), and Allison Cheung (Mable) earned the top five individual speaker awards and helped propel their schools to victory. Edgewood NRL (Anjali Narang, Rochelle Rouhani, Carl Lejerskar) and Anaheim Hills TCP (Sabrina Tawfik, River Crawford, Sassoon Perian) ranked first and second place respectively and will be moving on to represent Orange County at the Middle School Public Debate Program National Championship at Claremont McKenna College on June 5. Edgewood teacher and debate coach Ben Hughes, who founded the OCDL in 2009, has been impressed by how passionately his own students and those from other Fairmont campuses have dedicated themselves to debate. "The Fairmont Forensic Society has had an incredible year of growth and success, and next year looks to be even better. I am so proud of our students and of the coaches who are working so hard to build a strong debate program on each campus." Hughes is joined by four other Fairmont coaches: Kristi Mead (Anaheim Hills), Alice Lee (Mable), Lauren Frazier (Assistant Coach Edgewood), and Holly Wilson (Prep Academy). "Our success is due, in part, to a dedicated coaching staff, intelligent and hardworking students, and a great amount of faculty and alumni support from across Fairmont," continues Hughes. |
