Fairmont Prep Student Receives Perfect Score on AMC Math TestMarch 2009 |

Anaheim, Calif., March 1, 2009 — Fairmont
Preparatory seventh grader, Mark Huang, is among a select group of students who
received a perfect score on an annual mathematics test, which most recently
attracted nearly 14,500 participants across the state and more than 150,000
participants worldwide. The 24th annual American Mathematics Contest
8, or AMC 8, was administered to students in grades five through eight several
months ago. In California, only 35 students — most of whom are eighth
graders — answered all 25 questions correctly. Huang is not only one of
them, he’s also one of the 11 seventh graders in the state to have
accomplished such a feat. "I am both honored and proud to be Mark’s math teacher this year," said Suzette Lewis, who teaches Honors Algebra II and Trigonometry, among other classes, at Fairmont Prep. "Mark is a sponge. He learns a great deal every day because he chooses to explore and then he retains much of what he has learned. He is always analyzing and he does not miss a trick." Last November, Fairmont Prep students enrolled in Algebra I, II, Geometry and Honors Geometry also attempted the problem-solving challenge, the purpose of which is to spark an overall interest in and enthusiasm for mathematics as well as develop an individual’s talent in the area of study, according to Michelle Paraiso, Fairmont Prep’s Algebra I and CP Geometry teacher. "…The real rewards come from challenging each student with mathematics that is new, different and outside of the box,’” Paraiso explained. “The problems on the contest are difficult, but designed to be within the reach of students. Even so, if students managed to solve only one or two problems, this should be an encouragement to learn more because these problems are meant to be more challenging than students routinely encounter in their mathematics courses." Because of his high score, Huang was invited to take the AMC 10. Last week, the results were published online, and Huang scored in the top 1 percent nationally. Lewis also added that because of his AMC 10 scores, Huang qualified for and took the American Invitational Mathematics Examination earlier this month. "Mark’s score on the AMC 8 was certainly pleasant news but not a surprise," Lewis said. "Because Mark is studying Geometry, Algebra II and Trigonometry simultaneously this year, all of these topics are very fresh in his mind." Overall, Fairmont Prep was awarded a certificate of honor due to the performance of Huang and his classmates, Winston B. Lee and Eric Chiang. Huang and Lee scored in the top 1 percent and received distinguished honor roll certificates. Additionally, Chiang and Mark R. Abad scored in the top 5 percent and received honor roll certificates. |
