Fairmont Prep Team Places Third in National Debate Championship

April 2010

A team of tenth graders from Fairmont Preparatory Academy took third place in the US-WSDC championship, a High School Public Debate Program (HSPDP) national debate event, held Saturday, March 27 at Claremont McKenna College in Claremont, California. Prep Academy team member Nikhil Narang earned the sixth place speaker award.

Fairmont Preparatory Academy's winning parliamentary debate team made up of sophomores Ranvir Bajwa, Nikhil Narang, and Daniel Winget possess all the skill and tenacity to continue winning tournaments, says Fairmont Prep debate coach Holly Wilson.

"These students are a fine example of the future of our debate program here at the Prep. They are hard working, dedicated, talented and committed to being the very best they can be."

The HSPDP uses a proprietary debate format created by John Meany, Director of Forensics, Claremont McKenna College, and Kate Shuster, Co-Executive Director, Middle School Public Debate Program (MSPDP). The MS/HSPDP are the fastest growing debate outreach programs in the United States – more than 40,000 students and teachers participated in class and contest projects in 35 states and a dozen countries last year.

There is growing interest in the debate club at Fairmont Prep as the school's college-bound student population comes to understand the many resume-boosting benefits of the sport. Debate helps build overall subject knowledge, refine researching knowhow and polish public speaking skills. And, the Prep's highly motivated students especially enjoy the competitive nature of this war of words.

"There's just some unexplainable thrill to being able to respond to everything an opponent says," says Narang.

Teammate Winget sees debate as a way to improve his communication skills for later in life. "As a doctor, debate skills will help me to talk to the families of patients and become active in public speaking in college," he says.

Fairmont Private Schools is quickly gaining a reputation for having one of the best debate programs in the region. Fairmont's three middle school/junior high programs have consistently dominated the debate scene for the past few years, but this is the most impressive win for the young program at Fairmont's high school.
