Fairmont Private Schools to Tech Parents the ABCs of Cyber Safety

ANAHEIM, CA - July 30, 2008 – Is the appeal of Facebook lost on you? Are you wondering what Twitter is or why your child is addicted to MySpace? If so, Fairmont Private Schools invites you to attend its August Director's Series seminar: "Cyber Safety & Social Media."

Scheduled on August 14, Fairmont's free seminar will feature a panel of administrators, including the school's Chief Technology Officer, Mike Albee, who will address:

Popular social networking sites, their history and the similarities and differences between sites

The abbreviated code language teens use when e-mailing and texting

Online activities that could hinder your teen's acceptance into college

Cyberbullying, prevention and detection

Predators in disguise

Safe surfing considerations for teens

Prevention tips for parents (spyware, adware, firewalls, anti-virus software and spam-blocking tools)

"The Internet offers kids a variety of opportunities for education, research and social networking," said Albee. "However, dangers linger in virtual communities, and it is important for parents and other family members to help keep kids safe by monitoring their online activity, setting appropriate filters and preventing problems before they arise."

"Cyber Safety & Social Media" will be held on August 14 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the Theatre at Fairmont Preparatory Academy, located at 2200 West Sequoia Avenue in Anaheim. While RSVPs are not required, seating will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. The event is open to the public.
